Bonuses
  • Anniversary Bonus: Spend Rs. 125,000 every 6 months and get 1,200 points (worth Rs. 1,200) or 6 free PVR tickets

Kotak Mahindra's Essentia Platinum Card should be your pick to maximise your return on general department store and grocery spend. For high spenders, the card's next biggest source of value comes from the 1,200 points you earn on spend of Rs. 125,000 every 6 months. This could help offset the 500 point monthly cap high spenders may hit on department store + grocery spend. With below average 0.40% rupee value back on other categories, this card primarily stands out for its shopping and grocery rewards.

Citi's Rewards Card is your shopping card pick to (effectively) avoid annual fees. Technically, there is a Rs. 1,000 fee, but it's waived on Rs. 30,000 annual spend, manageable for many consumers. The card's 2.80% value back (10 points per Rs. 125 spent; 1 point = Rs. 0.35 cashback) on apparel & department store spend isn't top among all shopping cards, but it's great compared to most other cards. The next biggest source of monetary value comes from its welcome gifts of about Rs. 875 total. And, if you're a very high spender (Rs. 30,000 monthly), you'll earn additional bonus points worth Rs. 105 each cycle. The card generates below average value back of 0.28% on purchases outside of apparel & department store.

You can redeem points for either cashback, Air India/Jet Airways miles or IndianOil fuel rebates. Cashback is the most valuable (and of course versatile) option, but does require a minimum 5,000 points to redeem. Overall, this card will give you good point redemption flexibility and (likely) save you an annual fee while earning great shopping rewards.

  • Annual Fee: Rs. 1,000 (waived on spend of Rs. 30,000 in a year)
