Good for

  • Senior citizens seeking a cheap policy
  • Consumers seeking multiple policy options to choose from

Bad for

  • Those who require many vitamins and supplements
  • Expectant mothers in need of maternity benefits

Star Health and Allied Insurance is one of the best health insurers for senior citizens, with a cheap yet strong policy specifically dedicated to seniors. The company also has many other plans to choose from, including individual and family floater plans, but they are slightly less affordable than their senior citizen plans. Their plans offer COVID-19 coverage, lifetime renewability and a large list of in-network cashless hospitals to choose from in the event of a medical situation.

Star Health Insurance Policy Benefits and Exclusions

Star Health and Allied Insurance offers numerous different individual, family and senior citizen health plans to choose from. Their most affordable policy, compared to the market average in India, is the Senior Citizen Red Carpet Insurance Plan. This policy starts 13% cheaper than the national average, and has the fourth-lowest annual premiums of any policy we studied in the senior citizen medical insurance category.

The most important feature that sets the Red Carpet plan apart for seniors is the lack of a pre-enrollment screening. Star Health does not require a health screening before approving senior citizens for a new medical insurance policy, which is highly beneficial since seniors are more at risk for illness. Furthermore, pre-existing illnesses are covered after just 12 months of enrollment, compared to the usual 36 months required by most health insurers in India.

Star Health's Red Carpet Insurance Plan fully covers day care treatment, Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) treatment, and uniquely, annual health check-ups as well. They also cover nursing home room fees up to 1% of the maximum sum insured, blood and oxygen chargers are covered in full, and their maximum entry age is 75 years, five years older than average.

The company's other policies have many useful benefits for policyholders as well. Most importantly for consumers, Star Health and Allied offers lifetime renewability, which means once you're insured, you can continue to renew for as long as you need. Claims are covered for 30 days before hospitalisation, and up to 60 days post-hospitalisation, and if you're in need of a network hospital in a convenient location, you'll be sure to find one in your area among Star's nearly 10,000 cashless hospital options. They also provide coverage for COVID-19 illness and treatment.

Policyholders also receive a tax deduction under Section 80D as long as they own a medical insurance plan, and since Star Health is the second-largest health insurer in India, consumers can take comfort in knowing so many people trust their coverage.

The company owns the third-largest list of network hospitals, and every single one of their 9,900 options are cashless. They have a solid 90% claim settlement rate as well, which is just about the market average in India.

One of the key drawbacks with Star Health's medical insurance policies is the sub-optimal incurred claims ratio (ICR). The healthy range for an Indian medical insurer is 75-90%, which indicates a strong ability to settle claims against annual premium collection. Star Health and Allied's 63% ICR is 12% below the desired range, which could mean that policyholders may experience a few obstacles during the claim settlement process.

There are a few exclusions for consumers to be aware of before purchasing one of Star Health's insurance plans, however. Their standard individual health insurance plan, the Star Comprehensive Insurance Policy, does not provide a maternity benefit, so it's not well suited for expectant mothers or those trying to start a family. The company does not cover expenses for vitamins and similar supplements, or rehabilitation and respite care under their Red Carpet plan, and you will not be covered for any diseases or illnesses discovered within the first 30 days of coverage.

Policy Annual Premium Costs

Under Star Health and Allied Insurance, policyholders get lifetime renewability, which is one of the strongest qualities the company has to offer. But, with so many different policy options and variables depending on your age and maximum sum insured amount, it can be difficult to find the right plan to not only fit your needs, but fit your budget as well.

Star Health's most attractive plans is the Red Carpet plan for senior citizens, which offers annual premiums 13% cheaper than the national average. They also offer a wide range of of sum insured amounts, from Rs. 1,00,000 to Rs. 25,00,000.

AgeSum Insured AmountAnnual Premium

The company's standard comprehensive health insurance policy is much less affordable, and annual premiums can cost nearly double the national average in India. This is mostly due to very diverse sum insured amounts, ranging from Rs. 5,00,000 to Rs. 1,00,00,000. Star Health's highest level of sum insured - Rs. 1,00,00,000 - is the second-highest offered for an individual comprehensive medical insurance plan by any company in our study.

Claim Submission and Settlement Process

Star Health and Allied Insurance has one of the easiest-to-understand claim settlement processes of any medical insurer we analysed. They provide two different methods: a cashless claim option and a reimbursement option.

The cashless option is the simplest and is preferred by most policyholders. While at a network hospital, approach the insurance desk and ask the agent to email or call Star Health. Provide your Star Health ID card and any pre-admission or consultation forms. The staff at the hospital will verify the information and will begin the claims process through Star Health. Sometimes, an assigned field doctor must visit the patient for further verification, but once the patient is discharged, the hospital and Star Health will exchange claim documents and the authorized amount will be settled directly with the hospital. You will not have to pay any costs up-front, as you would with the reimbursement method, and 90% of cashless claims are settled within two hours.

Policyholders who opt for the reimbursement method will need to initiate all claims within 24 hours of hospitalisation, but unlike with the cashless option, the reimbursement method can be used at any hospital, even if it's out-of-network. Once treatment is completed and the patient is discharged, claim documents must be submitted within 15 days. Star Health will review the documentation and will reimburse you for the charges that are covered under your policy.

You can initiate a claims process online, on the phone or via email, and once your claim is submitted, you can track it every step of the way on Star Health's website. For fast claim approvals, especially for planned surgeries, the company suggests using a network hospital in your area, filling out the claims information and other medical forms in advance, and speaking with an agent at the hospital to review your forms and ensure they're completed correctly.

How to Apply or Renew

To apply for any of Star Health's medical insurance plans, navigate to their website, choose the plan that suits your needs and budget best, and fill out all required and personal information. Star Health makes this process simple and convenient online, and customer reviews cite how quickly they were contacted and approved for a new health insurance policy.

For those who are already members of Star Health and Allied Insurance, the renewal process is even simpler than the initial application process. Navigate to Star Health's website, enter your current plan information, and walk through the step-by-step renewal process in just a few minutes. Star Health offers lifetime renewability, so you can continue to extend your policy as many times and for as long as is needed.
